Eb mixolydian

The mixolydian mode is a major scale with a flat 7th, the mode of the fifth degree. It is the sound of the dominant 7th chord stretched into a scale, which makes it the working scale of blues rock, country twang and jam band vamps. Anywhere a song sits on a 7th chord without resolving, mixolydian is home base.

  • Aim at the flat 7th (Db) over a dominant chord: it is the note that makes Eb7 sound at rest instead of leading anywhere.
  • Bluesify it: bend the 3rd (G), add the flat 3rd as a passing note, and Eb mixolydian becomes roots rock vocabulary immediately.
  • Vamp I to bVII (Db) major chords (both in the scale) for the classic rock and jam-band mixolydian groove in Eb.
  • Over a static 7th chord, alternate mixolydian runs with the Eb major pentatonic to lighten the dominant color.

How to play E♭ mixolydian on guitar

Open G is the only open string in the scale and it sits a major third above the root, so there is no drone to lean on. Fret 1 on the D string holds the root closest to the nut, which lets you work low without shifting up to fret 11. Capo at fret 1 makes this D fingering. Box one from fret 11 ends at fret 15, meaning the low-neck roots need their own shapes. Chord v is Bbm.
