Bb dorian

The dorian mode is minor with a natural 6th, built from the second degree of the major scale a whole step down. The raised 6th brightens the minor sound just enough for it to swing, which is why it owns modal jazz (Miles Davis built So What on two dorian chords), Santana-style latin rock and funk vamps. Over a minor 7th chord it is usually the first mode to reach for.

  • Highlight the natural 6th (G): hold it over a Bb minor chord and you hear the exact difference between dorian and natural minor (Gb).
  • Vamp between the i and IV chords in Bb dorian (both live in the scale) for the modal jazz and Santana feel.
  • Build lines from the m7 arpeggio (root, bIII (Db), V, bVII (Ab)) and use the 2nd (C) and 6th (G) as color between chord tones.
  • Over a funk groove on a m7 chord, emphasize the 6th (G) against the flat 7th (Ab) for that bright-minor rub.

How to play B♭ dorian on guitar

Only the open G string survives in Bb dorian, and it happens to be the major sixth, the note that defines the mode. Bar the E-shape at fret 6 to anchor the key, or grab the A-shape down at fret 1, which means the easiest entry sits in first position. Capo at fret 1 puts A dorian fingerings to work, so open-string comfort returns in a flat key. Shift position at fret 10.
