The spanish heptatonic scale is, despite the name, an eight note set: phrygian with both the minor and major 3rd available: root, flat 2nd, flat 3rd, major 3rd, 4th, 5th, flat 6th, flat 7th. It formalizes what flamenco phrasing actually does, majorizing the 3rd over the tonic chord and darkening it elsewhere. Think of it as phrygian dominant and phrygian fused into one vocabulary.

  • Use both 3rds the way flamenco actually does: major 3rd (B) over the tonic chord, minor 3rd (Bb) when the line moves away.
  • Anchor on the phrygian cadence, bII (Ab) resolving to G, and treat the rest as ornament around it.
  • Over a Spanish-style vamp, the scale covers both the phrygian and phrygian dominant sounds without switching.
  • Its eight notes invite chromatic clusters; keep bass notes on root and 5th (D) so the color stays anchored.

How to play G spanish heptatonic on guitar

Open G is the root, open D the fifth and open B the major third, so an open triad rings before a finger lands. Bb and B both appear in the set. Low E reaches a root at fret 3, so the E-shape barre lands in first position. Three flats in the signature, and roots continue at fret 10 on the A string with fret 8 on the B. Box one sits from fret 3, meaning the next shape starts at fret 7.
