The bebop minor scale adds a major 3rd as a chromatic passing tone to the dorian mode, eight notes in all. The extra half step keeps chord tones on strong beats through a ii chord vamp, and momentarily brightens the minor sound in passing. It pairs with the dominant bebop scale for seamless minor ii-V lines.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
II
bIII
III
IV
V
VI
bVII
Same notes, different mode
G# bebop minor uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.
How to play G♯ bebop minor on guitar
Only the open B belongs to this key, and it comes in as the minor third, so open-string pedals are off the table. Capo fret 1 and play it as G, which lets the whole open G vocabulary carry over. Seven sharps in the signature. Fret 1 on the G string carries the root closest to the nut, and fret 4 on the low E the deepest, so heavy lines start low.
