The lydian augmented scale, the third mode of the melodic minor scale, raises both the 4th and 5th of a major scale. It outlines a maj7#5 chord with a #11, about the brightest and least grounded color mainstream jazz harmony uses. Reach for it when a major 7th chord should shimmer instead of rest.

  • Play it over maj7#5 chords: F# lydian augmented is the only common scale containing both the #4 (C) and #5 (D) above a major 7th frame.
  • Suspend rather than resolve: hold #IV (C) or #V (D) over the chord and let the brightness hang.
  • Think melodic minor down a minor 3rd from F#; the fingering transfers directly.
  • Use it for a two-chord lift: F#maj7#5 moving to the plain maj7 a whole step down turns the scale into an arrival effect.

How to play F♯ lydian augmented on guitar

Just one open string belongs here, and the D rings as C##, an augmented fifth, so drones are effectively out. Seven sharps make the page harder than the fingering. Roots start at fret 2 on both E strings and repeat at 9 on the A and 4 on the D, which lets you cover the low neck from a single anchor. F#aug is the I+ chord. Clamp fret 2 for E lydian augmented, so you can rehearse where there are fewer accidentals.
