The dorian b2 scale, the second mode of the melodic minor scale, is dorian with a phrygian flat 2nd: minor with a natural 6th and a dark half-step opening. That combination, shadowed at the bottom and bright in the middle, works over minor 7th chords when plain dorian feels too polite, and over sus4b9 chords in modern jazz.

  • Keep dorian's bright 6th (D) and add the dark flat 2nd (Gb): open phrases with bII (Gb) to root, close them on VI.
  • Over a sus4b9 chord, F dorian b2 (Gb) is the textbook modern-jazz choice.
  • It is the second mode of melodic minor; your F melodic minor fingering a whole step down plays it note for note.
  • Use it over a m7 vamp when plain dorian feels too polite; only one note changes, and it changes the mood entirely.

How to play F dorian b2 on guitar

Lowest root lands at fret 1 on the low E string, which means the shape starts almost at the nut. Roots continue at fret 8 on the A string, fret 3 on the D string, fret 6 on the B string. Open D is the only open string in the scale, a major sixth over the root, so drones are down to one option. Fm to Gbaug covers the first two chords. Position work begins at fret 5, so the box sits low.
