The major scale is the reference point of Western harmony: seven notes in the familiar whole and half step pattern, with a leading tone that pulls firmly back to the root. Chords, key signatures and all seven modes are measured against it. It resolves so naturally that it carries most pop, folk, classical and country writing, and learning it across the whole fretboard gives you the map every other scale on this site is drawn on.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
ii
iii
IV
V
vi
vii°
Same notes, different mode
Bb major uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.
How to play B♭ major on guitar
Bb major puts its A-shape barre at fret 1, so the easiest grip in the key sits right at the nut. With a capo on fret 1, everything plays as A fingerings, which means open-shape chords come back one fret up. Open A, D, and G belong to the scale. Both E strings carry roots at fret 6, the D string at fret 8. G minor, the relative, keeps the same two flats, so minor-side playing needs no new positions.
