  • Five notes, no anchor: root, III, b5 (Db), b6 (Eb), b7 (F) float over augmented and 7#5 sounds without one wasted note.
  • Use it as a compressed altered color: over a dominant chord on G, b5 (Db) and b6 (Eb) read as #11 and b13.
  • The major 3rd (B) is the only sweetness in the set; phrase toward it when the line needs a landing.
  • Try it against a plain minor chord a major 3rd below G for a polytonal shimmer that resolves by dropping one fret.

How to play G whole tone pentatonic on guitar

Open G is the root and open B the major third, so two strings can ring in key untouched. Box 1 starts at 3 on the low E. Roots sit at 10 on the A string, 5 on the D and 8 on the B, which means the tonic is available in every position. Position work ends at 7, so the second shape takes over above the first.
