  • Five notes, no anchor: root, III, b5 (C), b6 (D), b7 (E) float over augmented and 7#5 sounds without one wasted note.
  • Use it as a compressed altered color: over a dominant chord on Gb, b5 (C) and b6 (D) read as #11 and b13.
  • The major 3rd (Bb) is the only sweetness in the set; phrase toward it when the line needs a landing.
  • Try it against a plain minor chord a major 3rd below Gb for a polytonal shimmer that resolves by dropping one fret.

A capo at fret 2 makes this E fingering, so 5 flats in the signature cost you no new shape. Open D and both E strings fit. Both E strings sound the minor seventh, which means open ringing never states the tonic. Low E carries the root at 2, the A string at 9 and the D string at 4.
