Messiaen's mode 7 is the largest mode of limited transposition: ten notes, leaving out just one whole-step pair per tritone half. It is nearly chromatic, with symmetry at the tritone and only six distinct transpositions. In practice it works as organized chromaticism: dense clusters and runs that still obey an internal pattern rather than free atonality.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
bII
II
bIII
IV
#IV
V
bVI
VI
VII
How to play G♭ messiaen's mode #7 on guitar
Two frets of capo turn 8 flats into plain E fingering, which means the spelling stops mattering once the clamp goes on. Without it, roots sit at fret 2 on both E strings and fret 4 on the D string. Identical fingering also answers for C, six semitones up, so drilling either key trains both. Open B, G, D, and A sit in the key as Cb, Abb, Ebb, and Bbb. Position one ends at fret 6, so shift early.
