G double harmonic lydian

The double harmonic lydian scale is the fourth mode of the double harmonic major scale: root, flat 2nd, major 3rd, raised 4th, 5th, flat 6th, major 7th. Two augmented 2nds and a #4 pack it with as much exotic tension as seven notes allow. It shines over drone-based music, where every chromatic neighbor of the root and 5th can resolve inward.

it consists of these notes and degrees:

G

I

Gmaj
A♭

bII

A♭sus4
B

iii

Bm
C♯

#IV

E♭7no5/C#
D

tip
  • Practice the two augmented 2nds (bII (Ab) to III and, from the raised 4th's perspective, the gap into bVI (Eb)) as slides over a G drone.
  • Feature #IV (C#) against the 5th, then resolve bII (Ab) down to the root; two exotic tensions, two clean landings.
  • It is the fourth mode of double harmonic major: same notes as the double harmonic a 4th below G.
  • Over a static major chord with both b9 and #11 available (guitar-friendly as a phrygian-major hybrid vamp), this is the full-color choice.

How to play G double harmonic lydian on guitar

Open G is the root, the D string gives the fifth and the B string the major third, so a triad is available across three open strings. Roots repeat at 3 on both E strings, matching the E-shape anchor, so the low box and the barre sit in one place. Box one stops at 7, which means a move up the neck to reach the A string root at 10. G major heads the chord set.
