G augmented heptatonic

The augmented heptatonic scale takes the symmetrical augmented scale and adds a perfect 4th, giving seven notes: root, sharp 2nd, major 3rd, 4th, 5th, sharp 5th, major 7th. The added 4th gives the symmetrical augmented sound a stepping stone toward conventional resolution. It suits maj7#5 harmony where you want both the exotic color and a smooth melodic line.

it consists of these notes and degrees:

G

I

Gmaj
A♯

#II

B

iii

Bm
C

iv

Cm
D

V+

Daug
D♯

D♯aug

tip
  • Treat G augmented heptatonic as the augmented scale plus a perfect 4th: keep the shimmer, gain a stepping stone toward resolution.
  • Arpeggiate the two augmented triads inside it, then use the 4th (C) as the pivot when you want the line to land.
  • Over maj7#5 harmony it offers everything the six-note augmented scale does, plus a suspension (IV to III).
  • The half-step pairs (#II-III, V-#V, VII-root) invite slides; the 4th is your one honest passing tone between them.

How to play G augmented heptatonic on guitar

Open G is the root and open D and B sit a fifth and a third from it, so the middle of the guitar drones without a finger down. Low E and high E take a root at fret 3, which means the E-shape barre there anchors your first position. Bm and Cm follow as iii and iv. Daug and D#aug both belong to the key, so with no functional dominant you get color instead of resolution.
