  • Five altered tones over a dominant chord: use it on a V7alt in the key a 4th above F and resolve by half step.
  • Think of it as the altered scale's skeleton: b3 (Ab) (the #9), b4 (A) (the 3rd in disguise), b5 (B) and b7 (Eb) carry the essentials.
  • The b4 (A) is enharmonically the chord's major 3rd: lean on it when the line needs to still sound like a dominant.
  • Keep phrases short and land them: five tense notes with no release tire the ear quickly.

How to play F super locrian pentatonic on guitar

Box one opens at fret 1 with roots on both E strings, so the whole shape lives beside the nut. Open A sounds Bbb and open B sounds Cb, a diminished fourth and a diminished fifth above the tonic. Neither can act as a pedal, which means any low anchor has to be fretted. Clamp fret 1 and you are playing E shapes.
