The lydian augmented scale, the third mode of the melodic minor scale, raises both the 4th and 5th of a major scale. It outlines a maj7#5 chord with a #11, about the brightest and least grounded color mainstream jazz harmony uses. Reach for it when a major 7th chord should shimmer instead of rest.

  • Play it over maj7#5 chords: F lydian augmented is the only common scale containing both the #4 (B) and #5 (C#) above a major 7th frame.
  • Suspend rather than resolve: hold #IV (B) or #V (C#) over the chord and let the brightness hang.
  • Think melodic minor down a minor 3rd from F; the fingering transfers directly.
  • Use it for a two-chord lift: Fmaj7#5 moving to the plain maj7 a whole step down turns the scale into an arrival effect.

How to play F lydian augmented on guitar

All six open strings fall inside this key, with the B string landing on the augmented fourth, so the open tuning gives you a drone under the fretted line. Roots start low: fret 1 on both E strings, 8 on the A and 3 on the D. E-shape barre lands right at fret 1. Faug takes the I+ role, which means home base is an augmented triad rather than a major one. Capo fret 1 and it reads as E lydian augmented, so the open-string bed transfers whole.
