The lydian pentatonic, catalogued in some collections as the chinese scale, is root, major 3rd, raised 4th, 5th, major 7th. It compresses the lydian mode's floating #4 and leading tone into five notes that outline a maj7#11 chord. Sparse and bright, it turns a static major 7th vamp into something wide open.

How to play E♭ lydian pentatonic on guitar

Three open strings fall in the key, A, D and G, yet not one of them lands on the root or a fifth, so the drone idea is out and box one waits up at 11. Open A is the augmented fourth, open D the 7th and open G the 3rd, which means they work as colour over a fretted root. Roots themselves need fretting: 1 on the D, 4 on the B, 6 on the A and 8 on the G. Under a capo at 1, D fingerings apply.
