Eb iwato

The iwato scale is a Japanese pentatonic with maximum tension for five notes: root, flat 2nd, 4th, flat 5th, flat 7th. It is hirajoshi rotated so the half steps land on the root and the flat 5th, removing any point of rest. That rootless, suspended darkness suits cinematic and experimental writing more than consonant accompaniment.

  • Hirajoshi rotated to maximum tension: half steps sit at the root (E) and at the flat 5th (A), so nothing rests.
  • Use it for cinematic unease over a Eb drone; resolve, when you finally do, by leaving the scale entirely.
  • The bare 4ths skeleton (root, IV, b7 (Db)) keeps lines playable; b2 (E) and b5 (A) hang dissonance on that frame.
  • Try it as chord stabs: root with b5 (A) above, or b2 (E) with IV, for instant suspense-film voicings.

How to play E♭ iwato on guitar

Both open E strings carry the flat second, and open A carries the flat fifth, so two colour tones ring with no fingers down. Deepest root sits at low E fret 11, with D string fret 1 nearer the nut, so the shape has an anchor at either end. A capo on fret 1 rewrites D iwato shapes as this key, which means nut fingerings still apply. E-shape barre also sits at fret 11. First box quits at fret 15.
