The flamenco scale as catalogued here packs both 3rds into a phrygian frame: root, flat 2nd, flat 3rd, major 3rd, sharp 4th, 5th, flat 7th. In practice flamenco players slide between the minor and major 3rd over the phrygian cadence, and this seven note set writes that inflection into the scale itself. The b2 to root resolution remains the signature move.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
i°
bii°
biii
III+
#IV
v
bvii°
How to play E♭ flamenco on guitar
A capo on fret 1 rewrites the whole thing as D, which lets open-position shapes carry the key. Four open strings fall inside the scale, yet none of them gives the root or the fifth, so a drone has nothing to anchor to. III+ is spelled Gm#5. Fret 1 on the D string is the root nearest the nut, while the deepest sits at fret 11 on the low E.
