The composite blues scale merges the major and minor blues scales into one nine note super set: root, 2nd, both 3rds, 4th, flat 5th, 5th, 6th, flat 7th. It is less a scale to run than a map of every blues inflection available in one key: major sweetness, minor grit and the blue note all coexist. Blues and jazz players effectively think in it already.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
II
bIII
III
IV
bV
V
VI
bVII
How to play E♭ composite blues on guitar
Closest root is fret 1 on the D string, so low playing starts one fret from the nut despite the six-flat spelling. Open G rings the major third and open A the flat fifth, which means the only two open strings you get are both core scale tones. Capo at fret 1 and everything reads as D. A-shape barre sits at fret 6, E-shape at fret 11, and the first box stretches all the way to fret 15.
