The chromatic scale contains all twelve semitones, so strictly speaking it is the entire tuning system rather than a key. Its value on the fretboard is mechanical and connective: one-finger-per-fret technique practice, and the source of the passing tones every other scale borrows for smooth voice leading. Every scale on this site is some selection from these twelve notes.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
bII

bIII

How to play E♭ chromatic on guitar
Fret 1 on the D string is the closest root to the nut, while fret 4 on the B and fret 8 on the G share a pitch an octave above it. Neither the tonic nor its fifth is open, and the A string sounds Bbb, so the loose strings colour a line instead of anchoring it. Capo fret 1 and the D chromatic grip fits. Eight flats sit in the signature, which puts Fb and Cb where naturals would be.
