The purvi raga scale is the frame of raga Purvi from Hindustani classical music, here an eight note set: root, flat 2nd, major 3rd, both the natural and raised 4th, 5th, flat 6th, major 7th. The two 4ths capture the raga's characteristic tivra madhyam inflection. Its solemn, twilight character is traditionally associated with sunset performance.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
bII
III

How to play D purvi raga on guitar
Open D is the root itself, so the fourth string gives you a pedal tone with nothing fretted. Open A adds the fifth and open G the fourth, which means three of the six strings can ring against a fretted melody. A-shape barre sits at 5, E-shape at 10. Lowest root sits at fret 10 on the low E. Nothing forces a shift until 14, so the first box covers a lot of ground.
