  • Five altered tones over a dominant chord: use it on a V7alt in the key a 4th above C and resolve by half step.
  • Think of it as the altered scale's skeleton: b3 (Eb) (the #9), b4 (E) (the 3rd in disguise), b5 (Gb) and b7 (Bb) carry the essentials.
  • The b4 (E) is enharmonically the chord's major 3rd: lean on it when the line needs to still sound like a dominant.
  • Keep phrases short and land them: five tense notes with no release tire the ear quickly.

How to play C super locrian pentatonic on guitar

Both E strings carry Fb, a diminished fourth over the tonic, so they tint a line without ever grounding it. Nearest root to the nut is fret 1 on the B string, then 3 on the A and 5 on the G.
