C double harmonic lydian

The double harmonic lydian scale is the fourth mode of the double harmonic major scale: root, flat 2nd, major 3rd, raised 4th, 5th, flat 6th, major 7th. Two augmented 2nds and a #4 pack it with as much exotic tension as seven notes allow. It shines over drone-based music, where every chromatic neighbor of the root and 5th can resolve inward.

it consists of these notes and degrees:

D♭

bII

E

Em

tip
  • Practice the two augmented 2nds (bII (Db) to III and, from the raised 4th's perspective, the gap into bVI (Ab)) as slides over a C drone.
  • Feature #IV (F#) against the 5th, then resolve bII (Db) down to the root; two exotic tensions, two clean landings.
  • It is the fourth mode of double harmonic major: same notes as the double harmonic a 4th below C.
  • Over a static major chord with both b9 and #11 available (guitar-friendly as a phrygian-major hybrid vamp), this is the full-color choice.

How to play C double harmonic lydian on guitar

Four open strings ring in the key: both E strings at the major third, G at the fifth and B at the major seventh, so a drone sits under fretted lines anywhere on the neck. Root nearest the nut is fret 1 on the B string. Deepest root is fret 8 on the low E, which means the E-shape anchor and the first box start together. Em is the iii chord.
