Everything above the 3rd is drawn from the augmented and dominant-altered world, so it floats without resolving, useful over augmented triads and 7#5 chords or for impressionist, dreamlike passages.

  • Five notes, no anchor: root, III, b5 (F), b6 (G), b7 (A) float over augmented and 7#5 sounds without one wasted note.
  • Use it as a compressed altered color: over a dominant chord on B, b5 (F) and b6 (G) read as #11 and b13.
  • The major 3rd (D#) is the only sweetness in the set; phrase toward it when the line needs a landing.
  • Try it against a plain minor chord a major 3rd below B for a polytonal shimmer that resolves by dropping one fret.

How to play B whole tone pentatonic on guitar

Open B is the root, so the second string doubles the tonic under fretted notes. Open A and G sit a minor seventh and minor sixth above it, so three strings can sound without a fretted note. A capo at fret 2 gives A fingering. Box 1 begins at 7 on the low E, and roots repeat at 4 on the G. Nothing past 11 belongs to that shape, so the shift lands high.
