The name comes from scale catalogues rather than tradition; treat it as raw material for atmospheric, unresolved lines.

  • A whole tone scale with a dark doorstep: enter on b2 (C), then glide in whole steps from III to bVII (A).
  • Use it over a B7b9#5 vamp; the b2 (C) is the b9, the b6 (G) the #5 (G), and the whole tone upper half supplies the rest.
  • The name comes from scale catalogues, not tradition: treat it as raw material for atmosphere and sound design.
  • Alternate it with the plain whole tone scale to reveal the single half step; that contrast is its identity.

How to play B mystery #1 on guitar

Open B gives the root, while open A and open G ring the minor seventh and minor sixth, so three strings drone in-key with no fretting. Fret 2 on the A string offers the nearest fretted root, with both E strings answering at fret 7. Capo at fret 2 and it all becomes A fingering, which lets familiar grips do the work. First position stops at fret 11.
