The minor blues scale is the minor pentatonic with a flat 5th wedged between the 4th and 5th. That blue note is pure tension: pass through it, bend it, or lean on it before resolving to the 5th or root. It is the default vocabulary of electric blues and hard rock, equally at home over a slow minor jam and a fast shuffle in the same key.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
bIII
IV
bV
V
bVII
Characteristic note: F (b5), the blue note squeezed between the fourth and the fifth.
Same notes, different mode
B minor blues uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.
How to play B minor blues on guitar
Open B hands this key its root without a fretting finger, and both open E strings add the perfect fourth, so five of your six open strings sit inside the scale. Box 1 sits at frets 7 through 11. Barre grips land at fret 2 with the A shape and fret 7 with the E shape, which means you can stay low or match the box position. Capo 2 turns A minor blues fingerings into B, and D major blues takes the same shape 3 semitones up.
