The kumoijoshi scale is a Japanese koto tuning turned scale: root, flat 2nd, 4th, 5th, flat 6th. The two half steps (b2 against the root, b6 against the 5th) do all the work, giving it the sparse, haunting quality of traditional koto music. Guitarists use it for dramatic intros and as a fresh melodic angle over minor chords.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
bII
IV
V
bVI
Same notes, different mode
B kumoijoshi uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.
How to play B kumoijoshi on guitar
Open B is the root, open G sits a minor sixth above it, and the pair of E strings adds a fourth, so four strings drone in key. Roots also sit at fret 7 on the outer strings, which means an octave shape is available without moving your hand far. Fret 2 on the A string handles the low end. A capo at fret 2 rewrites the key as A, so any A fingering drops in. Position one runs out at fret 11.
