The iwato scale is a Japanese pentatonic with maximum tension for five notes: root, flat 2nd, 4th, flat 5th, flat 7th. It is hirajoshi rotated so the half steps land on the root and the flat 5th, removing any point of rest. That rootless, suspended darkness suits cinematic and experimental writing more than consonant accompaniment.

  • Hirajoshi rotated to maximum tension: half steps sit at the root (C) and at the flat 5th (F), so nothing rests.
  • Use it for cinematic unease over a B drone; resolve, when you finally do, by leaving the scale entirely.
  • The bare 4ths skeleton (root, IV, b7 (A)) keeps lines playable; b2 (C) and b5 (F) hang dissonance on that frame.
  • Try it as chord stabs: root with b5 (F) above, or b2 (C) with IV, for instant suspense-film voicings.

How to play B iwato on guitar

Open B delivers the root while open A delivers the flat seventh, so a two-string drone is free. Fourth degree arrives on the pair of E strings, which means four open strings sit in this key. Every note here is a natural, so the spelling needs no accidentals at all. Fretted roots wait at low E fret 7 and D string fret 9. First box closes at fret 11.
