The todi raga scale is the heptatonic frame of raga Todi, one of the principal ragas of Hindustani music: root, flat 2nd, flat 3rd, raised 4th, 5th, flat 6th, major 7th. Nearly every degree is inflected, giving it an intense, pleading quality that Indian tradition assigns to late morning performance. As a guitar scale it is hungarian minor's darker cousin with a flat 2nd.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
i
bII
bIII+
#IV
V
bVI
VII
Same notes, different mode
Bb todi raga uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.
How to play B♭ todi raga on guitar
Four open strings sit in this key, the B string among them spelled Cb, which means the open set colours a line but cannot hold a pedal. An A string root at fret 1 is the closest to the nut, which puts a low anchor in first position, with the low E root up at fret 6. FMb5 is the V chord, and another root sits at fret 3 on the G string. With a capo at fret 1, A shapes work.
