  • Five altered tones over a dominant chord: use it on a V7alt in the key a 4th above Bb and resolve by half step.
  • Think of it as the altered scale's skeleton: b3 (Db) (the #9), b4 (D) (the 3rd in disguise), b5 (E) and b7 (Ab) carry the essentials.
  • The b4 (D) is enharmonically the chord's major 3rd: lean on it when the line needs to still sound like a dominant.
  • Keep phrases short and land them: five tense notes with no release tire the ear quickly.
