The spanish heptatonic scale is, despite the name, an eight note set: phrygian with both the minor and major 3rd available: root, flat 2nd, flat 3rd, major 3rd, 4th, 5th, flat 6th, flat 7th. It formalizes what flamenco phrasing actually does, majorizing the 3rd over the tonic chord and darkening it elsewhere. Think of it as phrygian dominant and phrygian fused into one vocabulary.

  • Use both 3rds the way flamenco actually does: major 3rd (D) over the tonic chord, minor 3rd (Db) when the line moves away.
  • Anchor on the phrygian cadence, bII (B) resolving to Bb, and treat the rest as ornament around it.
  • Over a Spanish-style vamp, the scale covers both the phrygian and phrygian dominant sounds without switching.
  • Its eight notes invite chromatic clusters; keep bass notes on root and 5th (F) so the color stays anchored.

How to play B♭ spanish heptatonic on guitar

Open D sounds the major third and the open B reads Cb, the only two open strings in this key, so a drone under the tonic is out. Six flats in the signature. Capo at fret 1 turns the shapes into A spanish heptatonic, which lets a flatter key borrow open fingerings. Low E finds a root at fret 6, and the A-shape barre sits down at fret 1. Roots also fall at fret 3 on the G string and fret 8 on the D, meaning the low neck stays playable before the next box at fret 10.
