Bb iwato

The iwato scale is a Japanese pentatonic with maximum tension for five notes: root, flat 2nd, 4th, flat 5th, flat 7th. It is hirajoshi rotated so the half steps land on the root and the flat 5th, removing any point of rest. That rootless, suspended darkness suits cinematic and experimental writing more than consonant accompaniment.

  • Hirajoshi rotated to maximum tension: half steps sit at the root (B) and at the flat 5th (E), so nothing rests.
  • Use it for cinematic unease over a Bb drone; resolve, when you finally do, by leaving the scale entirely.
  • The bare 4ths skeleton (root, IV, b7 (Ab)) keeps lines playable; b2 (B) and b5 (E) hang dissonance on that frame.
  • Try it as chord stabs: root with b5 (E) above, or b2 (B) with IV, for instant suspense-film voicings.

How to play B♭ iwato on guitar

Both E strings ring the flat fifth open and open B gives the flat second, so three unfretted strings already belong here. A string fret 1 carries a root and B string fret 11 the next one up. A-shape barre stands on fret 1 beside that root, which means barre and scale share a home position. Capo fret 1 and A iwato shapes reach this key, so the nut version stays usable. Shape one ends at fret 10.
