A spanish heptatonic

The spanish heptatonic scale is, despite the name, an eight note set: phrygian with both the minor and major 3rd available: root, flat 2nd, flat 3rd, major 3rd, 4th, 5th, flat 6th, flat 7th. It formalizes what flamenco phrasing actually does, majorizing the 3rd over the tonic chord and darkening it elsewhere. Think of it as phrygian dominant and phrygian fused into one vocabulary.

A spanish heptatonic uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.

tip
  • Use both 3rds the way flamenco actually does: major 3rd (C#) over the tonic chord, minor 3rd (C) when the line moves away.
  • Anchor on the phrygian cadence, bII (Bb) resolving to A, and treat the rest as ornament around it.
  • Over a Spanish-style vamp, the scale covers both the phrygian and phrygian dominant sounds without switching.
  • Its eight notes invite chromatic clusters; keep bass notes on root and 5th (E) so the color stays anchored.

How to play A spanish heptatonic on guitar

Open A is the root and both E strings the fifth, so a drone and melody can share the open position. Five of the six open strings belong. Low E reaches its root at fret 5, which means both barre shapes bracket the neck at fret 5 and fret 12. One sharp in the signature, with C and C# both present. Roots keep coming at fret 7 on the D string and fret 10 on the B, letting the next box at fret 9 open with that root under the hand.
