Messiaen's mode 6 is an eight note mode of limited transposition: whole, whole, half, half, repeated twice, repeating at the tritone. It merges whole tone motion with chromatic braking points, so lines glide and then suddenly snag. Like all these modes its transpositions are limited (six here), which is exactly what gives music built on it its circling, suspended quality.
it consists of these notes and degrees:
I
II
III
IV
#IV
#V
#VI
VII
How to play A♭ messiaen's mode #6 on guitar
Closest Ab root to the nut is fret 1 on the G string, and barre roots follow at 4 and 11. Capo 1 rewrites the key as G, which lets you fall back on shapes you already have. Both E strings, the open D and the open G land in the key an augmented fifth, an augmented fourth and a major seventh above Ab, which puts them in play as colour but not as a pedal. Roots also sit at 6 and 9.
