Ab iwato

The iwato scale is a Japanese pentatonic with maximum tension for five notes: root, flat 2nd, 4th, flat 5th, flat 7th. It is hirajoshi rotated so the half steps land on the root and the flat 5th, removing any point of rest. That rootless, suspended darkness suits cinematic and experimental writing more than consonant accompaniment.

it consists of these notes and degrees:

A♭

I

B𝄫

bII

D♭

IV

E𝄫

bV

G♭

bVII

Same notes, different mode

Ab iwato uses the same notes as the scales below. Start from a different note and you get a new mode built on the very same note set.

iwato in all 12 keys, with chords and related scales

tip
  • Hirajoshi rotated to maximum tension: half steps sit at the root (A) and at the flat 5th (D), so nothing rests.
  • Use it for cinematic unease over a Ab drone; resolve, when you finally do, by leaving the scale entirely.
  • The bare 4ths skeleton (root, IV, b7 (Gb)) keeps lines playable; b2 (A) and b5 (D) hang dissonance on that frame.
  • Try it as chord stabs: root with b5 (D) above, or b2 (A) with IV, for instant suspense-film voicings.

How to play A♭ iwato on guitar

Open A carries the flat second and open D the flat fifth, so two strings ring in key with nothing fretted. G string fret 1 holds the lowest-numbered root and A string fret 11 the highest, which means the shape spans most of the neck. Capo fret 1 turns G iwato shapes into this key, so the open-position vocabulary carries over. Db kumoijoshi runs the same fingering five semitones up. First box stops at fret 8.
